Granite Town Rail Trail, Milford

  • PDF
Overview

The Granite Town Rail Trail is the old Ayer-Milford branch of the Brookline and Milford Railroad. The tracks have been removed and replaced in most areas with a gravel surface. The trail for the most part is a flat, wide rail trail. However, there is a section of trail that cuts through private land and as a result a slight detour on a short section of hilly singletrack is encountered.

There are numerous road crossings along the way with most crossings resulting in dismounting your bike for a quick hike-a-bike up/down to the road. Be careful crossing the roads as most are heavily traveled by local residents.

The rail trail continues on through Brookline and into Massachusetts. The further south on the trail you go, the less maintained the surface becomes. Go as far as you would like and turn around to return back to the parking area.

How To Get There

From the Milford, NH Oval turn onto South St./Route 13 South for .75 miles. Turn Right into first entrance for DPW garage and park on the grassy area toward the right of the garage. Trailhead is marked with signs.

The Ride

Mile 0.5 - Cross Union Street and proceed around guardrail to the right. Trail can be difficult to locate at times.

Mile 0.7 - tunnel under route 101. Continue straight at exit of tunnel.

Mile 1.0 - Armory Road Crossing. Please walk down steps. CE CAREFUL CROSSING AS THERE ARE 2 BLIND CORNERS FOR DRIVERS

Mile 1.2 - Singletrack detour through private land begins. CAUTION NOTICE: At end of downhill there is a rather abrubt left turn/steep to flat transition. PLEASE GO SLOW ON DOWNHILL OR YOU WILL END UP IN THE WOODS AT THE BOTTOM!

Mile 2.2 - Melendy Rd. crossing. Climb up steep embankment, cross road and down the embankment back to the trail.

Mile 3.0 - Power lines cross trail near Milford/Brookline town lines. Turn around here as tread get's less maintained ahead (but ridable for the adventerous).
