How We Rate climbs

We've put together this guide to help you gauge the hills in the area for climbing. We believe that our criteria is a fair assessment of the level of climbs in the Milford area.

If you're into the European bike racing scene then you know what an Hors Category climb is. We have put together this guide to categorize the rides in the area with some actual metrics that you can put a finger on. While we have put a lot of research into evaluating climbs, we welcome feedback on our ratings.

Listed below is a general guide to how we rate climbs in the Southern NH area. We consider grade, climb length, vertical rise and to a lesser extent, road surfaces. The climb ratings should be considered subjective in the end. We believe that our rating fairly represents the level of difficulty of the climbs in our riding area.

4th Category - the lowest category, climbs of 100-250 feet.

3rd Category - climbs of 250-500 feet.

2nd Category - climbs of 500-900 feet.

1st Category - climbs of 900-1300 feet.

Hors Category - the hardest, climbs of 1300 feet+.

NOTE: Our system does not attempt to compare climbing in Southern New Hampshire with actual Tour de France, Giro or Vuelta climbs but instead rates the climbs and the hills we have here from easiest to hardest. We do believe that our ratings are fair, honest and accurately rate the difficulty of climbs in this area.
